Keerai Kuzhambu / kulambu – Greens in Dal Recipe By Jai Padhu

My mom would buy the greens and she would handle the change from a small pouch that she had tied to her saree. She would throw in a couple of sprigs of curry leaves and coriander leaves for free. That was customary then. Fresh produce was really the norm. My mom used to make greens almost every day. She cooked simple food but I loved it. This is my moms recipe for making keerai kuzhambu. Her Keerai Kadayal recipe is a family favorite. She makes greens so flavorful that everyone at home loves greens. Here is how to do Keerai Kuzhambu with dal.You can use any kind of regular keerai / greens like Arai keerai , siru keerai, amaranth and palak. You can also use bitter variety of leaves like drumstick leaves or methi. Wash and clean the greens and chop them roughly. Set aside.

Ingredients :
Mustard Seeds - 1/2 Tspn
Urad Dal - 1 Tspn
Jeera - 1 Tspn
Curry Leaves
Garlic - 10 cloves
Small Onion - 200 Gms
Tomato - 50 Gms
Green Chillies - 3 Nos
Moongu Dal - 50 Gms Shoked
Greens - 400 Gms

How To Make :
1.Heat cooking oil in a pan and add in the mustard,cumin seeds
 and urad dal . Let the mustard seeds splutter.
2.Add in the chopped onions , curry leaves , garlic , chillies and
saute until soft. About 2-3 minutes on medium flame.
3.Add in the chopped tomatoes. Add in the salt and the turmeric
powder.
4.Saute on medium flame for 5 minutes until the tomatoes
are mushy.
5.Now add soaked moongu dal to it and add 2 cups of water and
for till the dal gets cook well appox. 15mins by closing lid
6.Once the dal get cooked well.Now add the greens to it and mix
well with the dal and allow it to cook for 15mins
7.You can also pressure cook the dal and add directly but you
won't get the exact same taste to the gravy.
8.Now switch off the stove and smach the greens with the dal.
Don't grind in mix , smach using smasher.
